Ben Affleck, Jonah Hill among celebs to live in poverty next week for “Live Below the Line”
Could you live on $1.50 a day? Ben Affleck is joining fellow celebs Jonah Hill, Sophia Bush, and Transformers‘ actor Tom Hiddleston on a week-long challenge to live on $1.50 a day, an amount the World Bank estimates as the extreme poverty line in the U.S.
Affleck tweeted about the challenge on Monday: “1.4 billion people live on less than $1.50/day. I’m joining Live #BelowTheLine on behalf of @easterncongo. Will you?
It should be noted that this challenge is just about food, not housing or other expenses. If you want to participate, click here for the very strict rules. You have to portion out ever your salt and pepper, and cannot accept “donations” of food from your friends and family. But if the people around you DO want to help, they can donate money to help alleviate world hunger. Donating food or money to your local food bank could also be a great way to help.
Live Below the Line is a poverty awareness raising project that works with a number of respected poverty charities around the world.
Over $3 million was raised for this project last year. It always seems like no matter anyone does, the problem of poverty can’t be solved. But even the smallest effort can help. Even though the world population has been steadily growing, according to the Global Poverty Project, the number of people living in “extreme poverty” has decreased in he past five years, going from 1.4 billion to 1.2 billion.
