It’s Pokémon Go’s world and we’re just playing in it

Pokémon Go is omnipresent. You can’t go anywhere where folks aren’t playing it or peruse anything on the internets without hearing about it. Instead of fighting it, because that’s a losing proposition, here’s a round up of all things Pokémon Go.

What in the freaking heck is Pokémon Go!?!

Via Vox:

In simple terms, Pokémon Go uses your phone’s GPS and clock to detect where and when you are in the game and make Pokémon “appear” around you (on your phone screen) so you can go and catch them. As you move around, different and more types of Pokémon will appear depending on where you are and what time it is. The idea is to encourage you to travel around the real world to catch Pokémon in the game.

Is the game really as popular as it seems?

The short answer, absolutely. The free app (the free part is important, because FREE) has been installed more in one week than Tinder has in 5 years. That’s absurd!

Armed robbers used the game to locate victims.

Via Gizmodo:

About eight or nine people have been robbed by four men over the past couple of days, a spokesperson from the O’Fallon Police Department told Gizmodo over the phone. The latest robbery occurred Sunday morning at around 2am by the men in a black BMW before they were finally apprehended by police.

The suspects used the Pokémon Go game to find their victims by anticipating where people might go through popular PokeStops—virtual sites in the game that can be designated at any real world location, from businesses to parking lots to churches.

While playing Pokémon Go a lady came across a dead body.

19-year-old Shayla Williams was looking for a water Pokémon when she stumbled across a corpse. Via CNN:

“I probably would have never went down there if it weren’t for this game,” Shayla Wiggins admitted. “But in a way, I’m thankful. I feel like I helped find his body. He could have been there for days.” Wiggins, who is working at a Dairy Queen for the summer before starting college in Arizona, said she still plans to keep playing Pokemon Go to explore her central Wyoming town.

The Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C. is asking that people not play the game there.

Via The Washington Post:

“Playing the game is not appropriate in the museum, which is a memorial to the victims of Nazism,” Andrew Hollinger, the museum’s communications director, told The Post. “We are trying to find out if we can get the museum excluded from the game.”

This.

People are actually getting exercise thanks to the game.

Via Yahoo:

Like any great exercise, Pokémon Go is not just burning calories and keeping users physically fit but also leading to more happiness and productivity, while helping people battle anxiety and other mental disorders.

Pokémon Go players prove that everybody loathes the Westboro Baptist Church.

Via USA Today:

As people across the country devoted their weekends to catching Pokemon, one user noticed that the church, known for its opposition to the LGBT movement, was listed as a gym on Pokémon Go. So that user claimed it, using a Pokémon named Clefairy. Its nickname is “LoveIsLove.”

Now you know!
