Sarah Paulson spills details on American Horror Story: Freak Show

Sarah Paulson American Horror Story Freak Show

You guys: We are officially halfway between when the last season of American Horror Story ended and the next is set to begin. It’s all downhill from here!

Despite all that positivity I’ve got to admit I’m more eager than ever for American Horror Story: Freak Show to kick off — largely thanks to Sarah Paulson’s new comments about what to expect.

“There’s going to be a little bit of a richer and potentially darker tone the way Asylum had, but with the humor infused from Coven,” Sarah told E! News, adding it’s a “beautiful hybrid” of the second and third seasons.

Sarah, who played the eventual Supreme on Coven and a wrongly detained psych patient on Asylum, said that — somehow — Ryan Murphy managed to up the ante for Freak Show. She recalled her first thought upon reading the new script was “Holy s**t!”

“I feel like that’s the appropriate reaction you want when you read the first script of American Horror Story,” she said. “It’s very exciting and totally nerve-wracking in the best way because you think, ‘How the hell am I going to pull this off?!’ And as an actor, I think that’s an exciting thing to feel.”

She added that Ryan’s asking her character to do “a lot of physical things.” And that’s saying something considering what she’s already endured!

“I’ve had live snakes on my body. I’ve had to feign masturbation on television, which my father would have to watch. I had to simulate abortion, I had to breastfeed one of my best friends who is a 35-year-old man,” the Emmy-nominated actress noted. “I mean you name it and I’ve had to do it on American Horror Story. There’s nothing I won’t do at this point—and that’s what’s terrifying.”

That being said, Sarah trusts Ryan’s vision.

“His interests tend to go towards the female and the intricacies of the female heart and mind and I love him so much for that because, boy, he has thrown the ball at me in a really beautiful way,” she said. “I worship at the altar of Ryan Murphy and I always will.”

Also willing to trust Mr. Murphy with their fates for another season? Among others are Coven newcomers Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Gabourey Sidibe and Angela Bassett as well as fan-favorite Jessica Lange. We even know Jessica will play a German ex-pat planted in Jupiter, Florida, where she manages one of the last freak shows in the country.

American Horror Story: Freak Show will premiere on FX in October.
