Leah Remini has decided to walk away from the controversial Church of Scientology. After donating millions, the former King Of Queens actress had questioned the rule of leader David Miscavige as well as the disappearance of his wife over six years ago. Because of it, she was subjected to years of interrogation and blacklisted by the church.
“It all began when Leah questioned the validity of excommunication of people,” a source told Page Six of Leah’s decision to walk away. “She is stepping back from a regime she thinks is corrupt. She thinks no religion should tear apart a family or abuse someone under the umbrella of ‘religion.'”
In 2006, prior to the wedding of Leah’s friends Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, Katie had innocently asked where David’s wife Shelly was, much to the dismay of former Scientology Celebrity Centre head Tommy Davis who immediately reprimanded her, telling her she didn’t have the rank to ask such a question.
Following the incident, Leah “was put through interrogations and blacklisted within the church that she donated millions to and that her family has spent their lives in,” and was “put through ‘thought modification’ for five years.”
“When you ask a question, like, ‘Where is Shelly?,’ you are immediately hauled in, interrogated and asked, ‘Why are you asking, who are you connected to, are you going on the Internet?'” said the source. “[You are then] shown pictures of the buildings that the church built, told that the ‘SPs’ are trying to get you because the church is winning, and that when you go on all these ‘SP’ sites, you are literally cutting across man’s ability to go free. You are, in fact, killing mankind.”
“SP” stands for “Suppressive Person” and is defined by the Church of Scientology as “a person who possesses a distinct set of characteristics and mental attitudes that cause him to suppress other people in his vicinity.”
The source continued, “Because Leah threatened to call the police to find Shelly, she was put through ‘Security Checking,’ her family was put through it, and her friends.”
Where is Shelly?
There has been a lot of speculation about what happened to Shelly. According to multiple reports Shelly has not been seen publicly since about 2006-2007, but is she really missing?
The Church of Scientology says that she is not missing, and that all reports that she is come from “unauthorized and discredited sources.” An attorney for The Church of Scientology told US Magazine last year “She is not missing. Any reports that she is missing are false. Mrs. Miscavige has been working non-stop in the Church, as she always has.”
A missing person’s report was filed by Remini with the LAPD, who checked up with it and were able to arrange a face-to-face meeting with Shelly Miscavige. Cops said the missing person allegation was “unfounded.”
Leah’s reasons for leaving Scientology:
According to the source, Leah’s main reason for leaving lies with David Miscavige’s beliefs and not necessarily the religion itself. “It’s not about wanting or not wanting to do Scientology,” the source explains. “The issue is that [Miscavige] is taking down this church and hurting people and families.”
Regarding her Scientology exit, Leah released the following statement:
“I wish to share my sincere and heartfelt appreciation for the overwhelming positive response I have received from the media, my colleagues, and fans from around the world. I am truly grateful and thankful for all your support.”
A rep for the Church of Scientology denies all of the allegations.
