The Rock uses throwback fanny pack pic to share inspirational message

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson hosted Saturday Night Live this weekend, and to promote his appearance he recreated his iconic and memetastic throwback fanny pack pic for one of his SNL bumpers (above). The recreation was nothing short of hilarious, but The Rock took to Instagram moments ago to post side-by-side photos and use the pictures to share a truly inspirational message.

“When I took this iconic absurdity of a picture in 1996 I was one year removed from sleeping on a used mattress I took from a garbage dumpster in the back of an hourly sex motel,” The Rock reveals. “Couldn’t afford to buy a bed so we do what we gotta do to get by. You can imagine all the fun colorful bodily fluids I tried my best to clean off.”

Fast forward more than two decades… “21 years later I’m taking the same photo backstage hosting #SaturdayNightLive for the fifth time.”

I confess I was a bit blown away at this point in his message — I simply cannot imagine.

The Rock continues with some words of inspiration: “If you’re going thru your own ‘used mattress’ tough time, do your best to have faith things’ll get better and always be willing to outwork your competition because you never know where life is gonna take you.”

In addition to the “big picture” advice, The Rock also focused on the little things. “And ALWAYS remember to place a protective tissue under your left elbow as to protect the fabric of the cheap ass turtleneck that had you out here looking like a bad ass buff lesbian.” This is something we noticed way back when the photo first went viral. We offered up this zoomed-in shot of The Rock “keeping his jam fresh and clean:”

Any more advice Dwayne? “Oh and tuck the thumb in the fanny pack. Always tuck the thumb. ??”

In summary, The Rock just made one of funniest throwback photos of all time even funnier, yet somehow managed to also turn it into a real deal inspiration. I can certainly smell what The Rock is cookin’ — and it’s a big ol’ boilin’ vat of awesome sauce! (And I don’t mean the kind of awesome sauce he had to clean off that mattress!)
