Sebastian Stan to play Captain America sidekick Bucky Barnes

'Sherlock Holmes' New York Premiere

It looks like Chris Evans, set to play the lead role of Captain America in The First Avenger: Captain America will have a trusty sidekick in the form of Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes.  Sebastian originally auditioned for the role of Captain America but instead has accepted sidekick status, an under appreciated but vital role in comics gone big screen.  The film, directed by Joe Johnston (Jumanji, Hidalgo, and October Sky), is set to begin shooting in Europe this summer.

Sebastian Stan’s most recent movies include “Hot Tub Time Machine”, Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan” (post production), and Joel Silver’s “The Apparition” (post production).  He is on quite a roll and this most recent Bucky Barnes casting only solidifies that trend.

The Bucky Barnes character has a complicated history in Marvel lore.  Bucky is an orphan of an American soldier killed in training at a U.S. Army camp.  This camp takes Barnes under their wing and he becomes somewhat of an unofficial mascot.  During this period he accidentally walks in on Rogers (Captain America) changing into his costume.  He goes through extensive training and becomes Captain America’s sidekick.  Towards the end of World War II Barnes is hurled into the freezing North Atlantic while attenpting to diffuse a bomb and becomes frozen in suspended animation.  He is discovered by the Russians and is trained to become an assassin under the code name of Winter Soldier.  Marvel has not commented on whether the Barnes character will take on the persona of Winter Soldier.
