Actress Reese Witherspoon had her squeaky clean reputation tarnished last week after she reportedly played the “Do you know who I am?!?” card with an officer who had pulled her husband Jim Toth over for suspicion of driving under the influence. (Reese was later charged with disorderly conduct after refusing to stay in the car as instructed and and her hubby received a DUI.) Reese appeared on Good Morning America earlier today and explained exactly what happened that night, including the fact that she not only played the “Do you know who I am?!?” card, but also the “I’m pregnant (even though I’m really not)” card!
“We went out to dinner in Atlanta and we had one too many glasses of wine,” Reese explained to host George Stephanopoulos. “We thought we were fine to drive and we absolutely were not . . .We know better and we shouldn’t have done that.”
As for her disorderly antics and odd commentary, Reese says, “I was so disrespectful to him. I have police officers in my family. I work with police officers every day. I know better. It’s just unacceptable.”
“I saw [the cop] arresting my husband and I literally panicked,” she admits. “I told him I was pregnant. I’m not pregnant. I said all kinds of crazy things. I had no idea what I was talking about.”
Since the arrest, Reese has made nice with officers and even spoke with them yesterday, apologizing for her behavior. “I spoke to them and again just said, ‘There is no reason to be disrespectful to a police officer.’ All I can say is I was just panicked.”
In addition to apologizing to the masses for her lack of judgement, which was surely a difficult thing to do, Reese was obligated to address the ordeal with her two oldest children, Ava, 13, and Deacon, 8. That, Reese says, was the absolute hardest part. “We have to say when you make a mistake you take responsibility and we are taking responsibility and doing everything in our power to make it right.”
