The more I hear about actress Mo’Nique, the more I find her completely fascinating. She’s made a ton of people in the film community angry for refusing to participate in most of last year’s Precious Oscar “campaign,” which didn’t prevent her breakthrough portrayal of Precious’ mother Mary from earning her a Best Supporting Actress nomination. Instead, Mo’Nique refused to play the game, and stayed in her hometown of Atlanta to film her television show (The Mo’Nique Show on BET).
Most recently she made tons of people uncomfortable with her unshaven legs on the red carpet of the Golden Globes. Now, in a recent interview on Barbara Walters’ Oscar special last night, Mo’Nique admits that her husband and manager Sidney Hicks is free to do whatever he would like:
“Could Sid have sex outside of his marriage with me? Yes. That’s not a deal-breaker. That’s not something that would make us say, ‘Pack your things and let’s end the marriage.'”
But don’t think that this is an open marriage, she admits that she hasn’t had sex with anyone else since marrying him, which to me, is kind of a bum deal. But hey — whatever works! Mo’Nique credits her attitude to being comfortable and confident in her relationship:
“We’ve been best friends for over 25 years, and we truly know who we are. Oftentimes, people get into marriages and they don’t know who they’re laying next to. I’m very comfortable and secure with my husband.”
And the unshaven legs? She insists that Sid is a fan!
I was searching around for a Mo’Nique clip to go with this post and found the following interview of her with Craig Ferguson, from November 2009. In the first few minutes, Mo’Nique jokes with Craig that he’s much sexier with his wedding ring. It seems like she understands why women would find her own husband that much more attractive!
