Coming off a moving Oscar acceptance for her stand out role in the movie Precious; Mo’Nique’s brother who was her nightmarish inspiration for that role, admitted to molesting Mo’Nique on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Here is a brief clip of that interview:
Gerald Imes said that he was 13 when the molestation happened and that Mo’Nique was either 7 or 8 years old. He decided to come on the show to apologize and hopefully “bring back some family unity”. These molestations have been public knowledge with Mo’Nique having discussed them on numerous occasions. She did not want to appear on the show but gave Oprah her blessing to allow Mr. Imes to speak.
Here is Mo’nique on Ellen explaining how she was able to play such a monster on Precious (Based on the novel Push):
What an amazing transformation. It is moving when she explains that playing the role allowed her to not hate her brother anymore and that she played him because she knew what a monster was. I don’t know what kind of healing will come from this public apology but I believe that making Precious changed and freed Mo’Nique’s heart in important ways. It is certainly a movie I will never ever forget.
