Is Sam Smith dating anyone?
Singer Sam Smith is dazzling people with his amazing cover of Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know,” and he has a new album this week inspired by what the best songs are usually inspired by: heartbreak, specifically unrequited love. Is he dating anyone now?
Sam told Fader that In the Lonely Hour, “is about a guy that I fell in love with last year, and he didn’t love me back.” Although he was rumored to be dating model Daisy Lowe, he says they are just friends, and wants to make clear that his music is about loving a guy, in order to normalize it. “It’s about a guy and that’s what I wanted people to know – I want to be clear that that’s what it’s about,” he said. “I want to make it a normality because this is a non-issue. People wouldn’t ask a straight person these questions. I’ve tried to be clever with this album, because it’s also important to me that my music reaches everybody. I’ve made my music so that it could be about anything and everybody – whether it’s a guy, a female or a goat – and everybody can relate to that.”
Smith, who’s been training for a career as a singer since he was 8, and has been promised stardom he never got for years, isn’t dating anyone new. In fact, he tells Fader, “I’ve never been in a relationship before. I’ve only been in unrequited relationships where people haven’t loved me back.”
Writing the album helped provide closure for him, he says. “I feel better for it. I feel almost like I signed off this part of my life where I keep giving myself to guys who are never going to love me back,” he says. “It’s all there now, and I can move on and hopefully find a guy who can love me the way I love him.”
He told Billboard magazine he can’t wait to get his heart broken “properly.” I’ll be like, ‘Thank God I’ve experienced something. Someone wanted to kiss me.’ That’s when it’s going to be interesting: When you break up, they’re taking a piece with them.”
