Clint Dempsey is releasing a rap album after the World Cup

Dempsey-face.

Clint Dempsey, the captain of the US Men’s National Soccer Team and its current conquering hero after scoring 32 seconds into America’s match against Ghana, has announced that he will release his long-awaited rap album after completing his soccer duties in Brazil.

Dempsey has some experience rapping professionally: his track “Don’t Tread,” released for Nike products eight years ago, was something of a minor success. And he has indulged his improvisational spirit in public from time to time since then.

But the announcement is something of an out-of-left-field (or late winner) surprise. And, in part, that is how Dempsey wants it.

The soccer star hasn’t spoken much about the forthcoming album because he doesn’t want to be accused of shirking his duty to the USMNT. We do know that it’s entitled “The Redux,” and will contain thirteen tracks.

The first single is already available, and the album as a whole also features a collaboration with rapper XO.

A portion of the album’s earnings will go to support the East Texas Food Bank, in Dempsey’s home state.

Here’s Clint kicking out the jams on “Don’t Tread,” which is now just about far enough back in his second career to be considered properly old-school:
