Every season of IFC’s Portlandia seems to get better as the sketches get more nuanced and less repetitive and Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen get more comfortable playing off each other. Have these two ever dated?
I’m not the first to wonder this. In 2012 David Letterman grilled them about the issue, but apparently what they have is a longterm comedy partnership that’s lasted longer than any romantic relationship Fred Armisen’s ever been in. Fred and Carrie (who’s also in the band Sleater-Kineay) have been working together for over seven years. Last year Fred told Howard Stern that he can only be in a relationship for about one or two years before he starts to want out. Fred told Vulture that he met Carrie because they ran in similar circles and had mutual friends, but when they met, it was friendship at first sight. “I felt like I’d known Carrie forever, immediately,” he said.
