A source tells The Sun that tempers are flaring on the set of Iron Man II, but not between hero Iron Man and villain Whiplash. The tension is between the two leading ladies in the film – Gwyneth Paltrow and Scarlett Johansson.

The source says the two starlets “come from different worlds and have completely different styles. Gwyneth has found Scarlett very demanding of the attention of the crew. It’s not a happy set.”

Part of the problem is that Gwyneth was expecting good friend Emily Blunt to get the part of the Black Widow, but it wound up going to Scarlett. Also an issue is the fact that Paltrow’s character (Pepper Potts) spends most of her time in stuffy business suits while Scarlett’s Black Widow gets to hop around in a leather cat suit toting firearms. The source says Paltrow will get her chance to shine by playing a major part in the climactic battle scene between Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Whiplash (Mickey Rourke). (Perhaps Paltrow has convinced the producers to create a scenario in which Pepper Potts is in lingerie during the scene?)

Gwyneth has taken a two-week break from filming, and is currently cooling off with Coldplay frontman and husband Chris Martin as his band tours the US east coast.

It surprises me that these two similar ladies aren’t getting along! They both seemed bored with acting and anxious to cash in their fame and allure on bad ideas like opening REALLY expensive gyms, sharing uninteresting insights on a much-ridiculed lifestyle blog, recording Tom Waits covers albums and directing “unwatchable” straight-to-DVD-special-features movie shorts. If these two had hit it off they would have been on their way to the first monopoly on terrible celebrity projects! They could build hybrid cars out of hemp, design pet clothes, write novels, put together charity concerts for weird actressy things like ferret homelessness – the possibilities (and amount of starcasm source material) are endless! SIGH.

I suppose I can still hope for a leaked Christian Bale-esque video of Scarlett and Gwyneth catfighting in costume. As much as I’m looking forward to Iron Man II, I would much rather see that!
