54-year-old Tracey Thompson is celebrating the birth of her granddaughter. The reason this story is making headlines is because she’s the one that did the birthing!

According to a press release from The Medical Center of Plano, Thompson carried her grandchild for her daughter Kelley McKissack. Kelley was struggling with infertility issues and her mom offered to be a surrogate.

Kelley and her husband, Aaron McKissack, tried to have their own baby for three years. After many heartbreaks, Kelley’s mom stepped in to provide what Kelley says is “the gift…[of] a lifetime.”

Kelley, age 28, and Aaron McKissack, age 33…attempted multiple infertility treatments and experienced three miscarriages. The last one ended in heartbreak on Christmas day 2014. However, the final round of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) did leave the couple with four remaining embryos. Tracey offered to be a surrogate for her daughter and son-in-law, using the remaining embryos from previous treatment.

On Wednesday, healthy baby Kelcey–a name created by combining Tracey and Kelley–arrived.

The press release notes that Tracey “underwent a series of carefully coordinated medical treatments to allow her body to carry a baby once again.”

“It is such a blessing that I can do this for my daughter,” Tracey said.
