Bruce Jenner says no to a sex change operation–for now

Keeping Up With the Kardashians About Bruce Jenner special

The two-part “About Bruce” special on E! has answered a lot of questions about Bruce Jenner’s ongoing struggle with and reveal of his transition. One of the most pressing is whether or not Bruce intends to go through with the complete gamut of sexual reassignment surgeries that make up a total male-to-female gender transition.

Recently, Bruce acknowledged that he’s weighing his options on Facial Feminization Surgery, or FFS for short. Like a total gender reassignment, FFS is actually a number of different, related, but not required surgeries–patients can choose to have some procedures done, and not others. Currently, Bruce’s plan is to change the shape of his forehead, and to alter his jawline. Those procedures will be in addition to the work he’s already had done: a nose job, an upper lip lift, and a reduction in his Adam’s apple.

But FFS is less radical than a sex change, which involves hormone therapy and, for males, genital inversion, among other things. When asked if he was planning to go the full route–the exact wording was what Jenner’s plans were for “remov[ing] that little thing down there,” Bruce’s response was polite, but firm. “That’s kind of the last thing you can do,” he said. “You can do an awful lot before that.”

And has he set a date for that particular surgery? “As of right now, no.”

Bruce pointed out that “living as a man would be hard after you do enough stuff.” The 65-year-old intends to just “play it by ear,” for the time being.
