When Kateri and Jay Schwandt were waiting to find out the sex of their twelfth child, the suspense was higher than ever before — which was ironic, considering most people around them were already certain they would welcome a little boy. After all, that’s what happened with the Schwandts’ first 11 children.
Even though Jay told friends to “think pink,” baby No. 12 followed suit with his older brothers: Little Tucker Ray Schwandt was born on August 4.
“We didn’t know what he would be when he was first born. We don’t find out. It’s always a boy, but it’s always a surprise,” Kateri told Central Michigan TV station THV 11.
The Schwandt children — who now range in age from 21 years to three days — certainly keep their parents busy.
“It sometimes feels like a locker room,” Kateri joked. Fortunately, when it gets to be too much, Kateri can probably send the boys over for a stay at her sister’s house. With 10 boys of her own, she also knows what she’s doing.
That fun fact is all the more amazing considering that a baby’s sex is technically determined by the father’s genes. In this case, the dads of 12 and 10 boys are unrelated.
Schwadts, who are devout Catholics, aren’t ruling out a 13th pregnancy. But, for now, they are taking one motto to heart: Thank heaven for little boys.
