It’s happened before in Hollywood: Friends with Benefits vs. No Strings Attached, Dante’s Peak vs. Volcano, Tornado vs. Twister – two movies with nearly identical plots that are essentially dupes of each other. It’s happening again but this time it’s Magic Mike vs. Chocolate City.
The movie follows Michael McCoy, an attractive guy who, despite his best efforts, can’t seem to make ends meet. His dwindling bank account hinders his ability to get ahead in life and, most importantly, meet girls. As a result, Mike decides to try his luck as a male stripper. To say the movie is similar to Magic Mike would be an understatement.
Chocolate City has no shame in presenting itself as Magic Mike’s twin. The movie poster includes the tagline “Are you ready for the real magic?” and they use the phrase “Feel the magic” within the trailer, not to mention the lead character’s name is Mike. Despite being a Magic Mike photocopy, it includes well-known names such as Tyson Beckford, Vivica A. Fox, Ginuwine, and Carmen Electra.
