Sons of Anarchy, the most popular show in the history of FX, is officially getting a spinoff.
Script development has begun on the pilot episode for Mayans MC, which will focus on the fictional Latino motorcycle club of the same name that was featured prominently during Sons‘ successful run.
This project is headed by Anarchy’s creator Kurt Sutter and writer-director-musician Elgin James.
Sutter told Variety, “I wanted to find a strong, unique Latino voice because I didn’t think a white guy from Jersey should be writing about Latin culture and traditions. Elgin is that voice.”
Elgin James has a fascinating backstory of his own. He was a singer for the hardcore punk band Wrecking Crew and went on to found FSU (F*** S*** Up or Friends Stand United), an anti-racist group from Boston.
James has recently received critical acclaim for his debut film Little Birds, which is loosely based on his own life experiences.
