Girls‘ Lena Dunham was one of the most modestly dressed women at the Golden Globes, but it would be wrong to assume that fashion choice was because she’s ashamed of her body. Case and point: Just hours before walking the red carpet, Lena posed with just nude pasties in an Instagram photo shared by Girls producer Jenni Konner. (Click for the uncensored picture.)
As anyone whose watched almost any episode Lena’s HBO show knows, she isn’t shy about showing some skin. But, the Instagram picture — accompanied by “#FREETHENIPPLE” — was an attempt to make a bigger statement about the double standards that exist with policies about male vs. female nudity on the social media platform. The argument is that nipples aren’t sexual organs and should be allowed when shown in non-sexual settings, such as a photo of a woman breastfeeding. Lena was an early adopter of the campaign, as demonstrated by this post from October 2013.
Although a handful of other celebrities, including Miley Cyrus and Chelsea Handler, have made similar statements, Instagram hasn’t indicated they will change their policies.
