One Bad Choice: Kaitlyn Hunt is now engaged
Kaitlyn Hunt says she believed her 14-year-old girlfriend was going to get her off of underage sex crime charges. At 18, she claims had no idea that she could face serious consequences for having an underage girlfriend.
According to the latest episode of One Bad Choice, Danielle texted Kaitlyn she was gonna get her off of charges. They exchanged over 20,000 texts including some explicit photos and videos sent by Kaitlyn. “I didn’t care to think about the future. I didn’t care to think about the case. I didn’t care tot think about me getting in trouble. I just did what I wanted to do,” Kaitlyn says about why she continued to text Danielle.
By August, 2013 Danielle turned her phone over to her parents, who in turn gave it to the police. Kaitlyn was immediately incarcerated for violating her no-contact order. “I thought to myself, ‘There’s no way I’m going to be able to live through this,'” she says about her time in jail. Although she felt that Danielle’s parents only reported of her because they didn’t approve to same-sex relationships, her lawyer reminded her that the reason she landed in jail the second time for this issue was because she violated the no-contact order, making her desire to go to trial to expose what she believed to be the truth of the situation moot.
She ultimately served 120 days in jail and was sentenced house arrest for two years, of which she’s already served a year and a half. Her plea deal did not include having to register as a sex offender. “It was a relief, putting that bracelet on,” she recalls. Still, it was a struggle having to get permission to go anywhere. Still, she was able to go to school to become a nurse.
Kaitlyn says she appreciates everything much more than she did before, like when her fiancé, 28-year-old Latasha Thomas (LT,) cooks for her. They plan to get hitched in New York when she gets her ankle bracelet off.
“I put myself in jail. It wasn’t her,” she says of her responsibility in the situation. “I might have lost myself for a little bit, but I definitely found myself again.”
