The Justin Bieber Kylie Jenner connection is strong–and Bieber’s recent comments in defense of the oft-criticized Jenner are the latest proof of it. Bieber stood up for Kylie in his most recent interview, saying that it’s “f*cked” how the 18-year-old reality TV sensation is portrayed by the media and attacked by haters.

Bieber’s been on a press tour to support Purpose, his most recent musical endeavor, which drops on November 13th. The 21-year-old spoke to Billboard and raised eyebrows by saying “Enough with the Justin Bieber Show. I want to veer away from the self-centered attitude.” But it was the Justin Bieber Kylie Jenner comments that drew the most attention.

When asked to talk about how fame in his very early life had changed him, Bieber became introspective–and pointed. “I wouldn’t suggest being a child star,” Bieber said. “It’s the toughest thing in the world.”

Bieber, whose 43 million Instagram followers make him one of the few celebrities more popular than Kylie Jenner, then addressed the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star and PacSun rep specifically:

Like Kylie. Look at her world: She has been living on TV since she was a kid. Every time she’s looking around she sees a camera, and that’s affecting how she’s thinking and how she’s perceiving people and why she has to do certain things….Situations that happen taint your mind, especially in this industry. Especially for girls….I hurt for some people. Everything is so [based] on people’s looks and stuff….Look at the statistics on how many child stars have crumbled and turned out to be wack jobs. It’s because–it’s f*cked, bro, this lifestyle.

Kylie Jenner, who recently Instagrammed a pouting, cleavage-heavy selfie because she broke a nail, has received a bevy of negative attention over the past few weeks. Yesterday, her mother allegedly called her “selfish” because Kylie had been “demanding” her own KUWTK spin-off; earlier this week, she withstood a barrage of criticism over her choice of an “Eskimo” Halloween costume, which Kylie later said was meant to be a “snow princess.” And, before that, Kylie was under fire when Time named her one of its “30 Most Influential Teens” for her social media reach.

She hasn’t yet responded publicly to the Justin Bieber Kylie Jenner remarks, but Kylie did take to Twitter last night to address her fans:
