Brooke Shields says micromanager mom Teri Shields ‘kept track’ of her virginity

Brooke Shields - Mom Teri Shields

Brooke Shields opens up about her infamously strained relationship with her alcoholic manager mom Teri Shields in her new memoir, There Was a Little Girl… And it’s clear based on the excerpt in People that Brooke is still trying to come to terms with everything, even two years after Teri’s death.

“Even though I understood her better than anybody else, I’m not sure I ever understood her fully,” Brooke, 49, said of Teri, who was widely criticized for pushing Brooke to appear in risqué ads and movies at a young age. At the same time, Teri had a big role in crafting Brooke’s image as “the most celebrated virgin of our time” by insisting she include a chapter about purity in her teenage memoir.

Brooke said her mom was similarly involved in her actual sex life, especially when it came to her college relationship with eventual Superman Dean Cain.

“He was incredibly and painfully patient with me regarding sex,” Brooke said, explaining she eventually lost her virginity to him at the age of 22. “I made him wait and wait and my mom kept track.”

The model severed most ties with her mom in the 1990s and they remained largely estranged until Brooke became a mom 11 years ago — at which point she said they began to finally have a healthy relationship. Sadly, Teri was diagnosed with dementia around that same time and ultimately passed in 2012. Brooke now keeps her mother’s ashes in an urn on her living-room bar so “she could remain forever close to the two most important things in her life: me and booze.”
