Beauty and the Beast was the first animated film to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar before Up

This year (2010) the wistful animated film Up won the best animated film, and is one of ten films nominated for Best Picture. This is the first time this honor has been bestowed on an animated film, the first time this happened was in 1991 with Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. That may have been an even better honor because there were only five films nominated then, so it meant a little more. The other films were Bugsy, The Silence of the Lambs, JFK, and The Prince of Tides.
