Device lets you “taste” food without the calories by inhaling flavored vapor

Europeans are enjoying a new technology that allows you to taste dessert an other yummy foods without all the calories (and without the chew-spit method.) It’s call “Whaf” and it creates a flavor vapor that you can suck through a straw.

A liquid food is added to the Whaf caraffe, and ultrasound waves create a vapor you can inhale.

Eric Freedman, the director of marketing at the company that makes Whaf explains:

“At the base of the Whaf are piezoelectric crystals. These vibrate at an ultrasonic frequency when the liquid in the Whaf is above a certain level. This level is achieved when the Whaf is tipped on its side and with the appropriate level of liquid.

A normal glass full of the droplets created by the Whaf will hold around 40 microliters (or milligrams) of liquid in the air. If you sip these into your mouth with the Whaf Straw you will taste the liquid – an especially pleasing experience when the liquid has a strong or noticeable taste.”

Chefs in the US have taken notice of the new technologay (which was called “Le Whaf” last year, but is now shorted to “Whaf”) and are using it to transform culinary experiences.

Scientist David Edwards and designer Marc Bretillot are the minds behind the Whaf, and Edwards imagines whole restaurants designed around inhaling food instead of eating it.

Last year Edwards gushed to the Mail Online last year:

“Imagine a restaurant where, instead of sitting at a table, you walk around. Instead of eating food, you’re breathing it in as you walk from room to room, each with a different flavour. Celery in one. Steak in another. Then pate.”

Would you like to have this device in your house to satisfy a craving, or just enjoy a different culinary experience?

It’s currently retailing in Europe for about $160, and you usually have to buy specially made liquids, usually dessert flavors and savory soups.
