16 & Pregnant Briana Dejesus and Katie Yeager on Good Morning America

Good Morning America welcomed two of the cast members from Season 4 of 16 & Pregnant to discuss the show and their lives this morning.

Katie Yeager, who will be featured tonight, and Briana Dejesus, coming up April 3, chatted up all things teen pregnancy including the different roles that their baby-daddys play in their lives and the struggles they face as young mothers.

Here is the full interview followed up by some highlights from the piece. I guess I aught to give a spoiler heads up as the girls do talk about their current situations.

GMA: How is life being a mom at age 17?

Katie: You don’t know what love is until you have a baby. It gets difficult sometimes. Sometimes you just get so overwhelmed. Like, you’re up to your head in diapers and you have homework and all.

GMA: We met Joey on the show. How are you two today and how is he with being a dad so young?

Katie: We’re great. He loves his daughter. He melts in to putty in her hands. I’m happy that he stepped up. Very lucky that he stepped up.

GMA: Briana, I know you have beautiful Nova Star and you are not together with the father Devon {sp?}. Where is he today in terms of parenting, offering any help? Are you getting anything?

Briana: No. He comes and goes as he pleases. It’s tough.

GMA: On the show we see your mom and sister really stepping up to the plate however it wasn’t easy for your sister. She too was pregnant and made a very different choice.

Briana: Yes. She made a sacrifice, she decided to get an abortion. I know she’s sad on the inside because like we’re grieving a life but we’re also trying to celebrate one.

GMA: You were willing to admit that you thought about life if you had made that choice.

Briana: Yeah. it’s like when I see my sister get up and go to school, go to work, do her thing it tears my heart because I can’t want this for myself. It’s hard to be so young and to do this on your own. Because I feel like I’m doing this on my own. So I see my life like that really could have been me. But something in my gut told me I’m strong I can do this. I love my daughter so I’m okay.

Amy Kramer with the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancies was on hand and she dropped some stats in regards to teen pregnancy. She said that a study shows that after a year following birth, more than half of teen moms don’t live with the father of their baby. More than 8 out of 10 aren’t married.

Katie revealed that she’s engaged to Joey and Briana stated that she’s starting college in the fall.

These girls are already 2 of my favorites. Katie and Joey seem to have a strong relationship and she seems to be extremely mature. In one breath, I’d love to see them get picked up for Teen Mom 3. In another, I’m scared that might ruin their relationship and I really want them to succeed! I think Briana has a good shot at getting picked up as a new TM girl, also. She seems mature, and she’s GORGEOUS! I think she has a unique situation and will set a good example for girls. None of the TM girls have a truely absentee father to their child beside Jenelle, and she hasn’t been the best example of rising herself and her child above a crappy situation. Adam is wishy-washy, but Chelsea is a couch bum so I’ve always struggled to feel bad for her. Briana looks like she’ll actually have to work and not have everything handed to her.

Funny how they say this prevents teen pregnancy, then why are you having a THIRD season??? I think we get the point

      • Ashley

Fourth season actually, and I agree.

You can’t deny the fact that the national statistics have decreased by 9 percent. That isn’t a fluke and it has occurred while this show has been on the air. If it continues to decrease by making this subject more visible, then I’m for it.

i cant believe 3 in 10 teen girls are getting pregnant in the US. that is a mindblowing statistic! at least it is decreasing, i suppose.

Personally I’d love to see Mackenzie for Teen Mom 3. I think she is the type of responsible, Christian girl from a loving and stable family that needs to be chosen to be a role model for young girls. Choosing girls from troubled families and backgrounds is only going to lead to more drama like we have on TM1 and TM2, its ridiculous and if those are the girls they are going to choose they need to just end the show now. I understand girls like Katie being chosen for 16 and Pregnant, but to give girls a show like Teen Mom where they are making tons of money being a role model for young girls I think they need to choose girls from more stable and moral backgrounds.

A “responsible” “Christian” girl would not be getting pregnant as a teen/out of wedlock.

i liked both mackenzie and katie. mackenzie was so young but seemed to have a good support system and seemed pretty positive. although i have to laugh at the “good christian girl” comment, because “good christian girls” don’t usually get pregnant underage!

katie seems LOVELY and mature. i’d love to see her on teen mom, but she is the kind of girl you’re really rooting for her to make it through and succeed, and TM could get in the way of that, needing drama and all.

      briana seems great too.

the new seasons seem so much more staged?
