Single Texas woman ‘marries’ herself

Yasmin Eleby Wedding Party

To celebrate her 40th birthday earlier this month, Houston woman Yasmin Eleby got married to herself. Now, if your reaction to that information is anything like mine initially was, then you’re thinking it’s a bit loony. But, actually, the idea is growing on me…

According to Black Art in America, Yasmin vowed to throw a wedding for herself if she hadn’t married by the age of 40. So, with that milestone birthday looming, Yasmin planned her own “celebration of love and life” ceremony at the Houston Museum of African American Culture for Jan. 3 — complete with her parents walking her down the aisle, bridesmaids standing at her side and a pastor officiating the ceremony.

“I was overwhelmed with the outpouring of love and support that was shown to me during my celebration of love and life,” Yasmin said shortly after the big day on Facebook, where she shared the photos posted here. “Every word that was said and sung was absolutely perfect for the occasion. I couldn’t imagine the ceremony being any more poignant and meaningful.”

Although the celebration was certainly nontraditional, Yasmin’s description of it has convinced me it is really a good concept. A person’s wedding day is often one of the best in life, not only because you are uniting with a partner but also because you get to celebrate with friends and family. So, why should a person have to miss out on the second part of that just because they don’t have a spouse? The only potential trick will be how Yasmin goes about divorcing herself if a special somebody else comes along! 😉
