Ellen Pompeo doesn’t find acting ‘terribly empowering,’ plans to quit after Grey’s Anatomy

Ellen Pompeo - Grey's Anatomy

Ellen Pompeo, who plays the titular character in Grey’s Anatomy, said this week that the show’s end may also be the end of her acting career.

“I definitely don’t have a strong desire to act after Grey’s,” she said during a panel discussion hosted by Buzzfeed. “I feel myself transitioning… I’d like to try and challenge myself. I feel like I got the acting thing. I would like to try and see if I could do something different, and be successful at something different.”

Although that’s a valid reason for someone who has been in the same career for more than 20 years, Ellen added seeking a new challenge isn’t the only thing motivating her.

“I don’t find acting terribly empowering,” she said.

“Wow, that’s a great statement,” said Scandal‘s Kerry Washington, who was seated beside her.

Ellen continued, “For the place I am in my life… I don’t necessarily want to work for other people.”

If she does move on from acting when Grey’s Anatomy ends, it’s unlikely Ellen will leave the entertainment industry altogether.

“Producing is very challenging, but it’s very interesting to me and fun to try and find projects. That’s where I really have fun now,” said Ellen, who recently founded her own production company, Calamity Jane. “That’s fun for me, to find a book or an article or an idea and turn it into something.”
