Sturgill Simpson's sophomore album Metamodern Sounds in Country Music has made a vast majority of 2014's year-end best of lists. The set of songs, a challenge to the Nashville machine churning out "Hot Country," opens up with a fascinating exploration of God, drugs, alien reptiles and the core idea that none of us really have this thing called life figured out.
