Ricky Gervais didn’t hold back with scathing jokes during the 2010 Golden Globes, and most of the jokes fell on an unamused crowd. Among his victims were people that people usually don’t skewer: he referenced Paul McCarthy’s huge divorce settlement and Halle Berry’s Catwoman role (indeed a low point).
His best moment was when he walked on stage with a pint of beer and blamed his barbed humor on the drink. He continued, “I like a drink as much as the next man, unless the next man is Mel Gibson!”
Mel seemed to brush off the jab and didn’t miss a beat in his delivery. The man may be crazy, but he’s a professional. He was also shockingly sober.
A star that wasn’t sober on stage tonight? Julia Roberts. But really, you can’t blame a girl when you’re giving out the last award of the night and there’s free champagne on the table.
