Sometimes us bloggers get so caught up in being snarky that we forget the gravity of the things we’re making fun of. Former Miss USA Shanna Moakler gave me a wake up call yesterday when she resigned as co-director of the Miss California organization – a sobering reminder that we have too few positive role models for the children of today. Her decision to resign stems from Donald Trump’s decision to allow Carrie Prejean to retain her title despite having taken topless photos and using her title as a platform to further her personal political beliefs. Here is part of what Shanna had to say in a statement released to the media:
Here’s the full statement:
“Since the press conference yesterday, I had a chance to think about what has taken place, and I feel that at this time it is in my best interest to resign from the Miss California USA organization,” states Shanna Moakler. “I can not with a clear conscious move forward supporting and promoting the Miss Universe Organization when I no longer believe in it, or the contracts I signed committing myself as a youth. I want to be a role model for young woman with high hopes of pageantry, but now feel it more important to be a role model for my children. I am sorry and hope I have not let any young supporters down but wish them the best of luck in fulfilling their dreams.”
SPECIAL DIRECTOR’S CUT!
I originally wanted to use one of Shanna’s many many many nude images but eventually decided the “Domestic Goddess” photo was just too perfect. Here’s an out-take of my first attempt:
