Is ‘leaked’ The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo red-band trailer a Sony plant?

Lisbeth Salander in Girl with the Dragon Tattoo English version red-band trailer

The upcoming English version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo directed by David Fincher has fell victim to the bootlegged leaked trailer phenomenon. Or has it?

A video posted to YouTube shows the red-band trailer which has the appearance at first to be bootlegged with the screen off center but the quality actually increases as the clip progresses. Now there’s a viable conspiracy theory that Sony pictures planted the preview as part of an underground style promotion that would suit the popular computer hacking protagonist of the novel Lisbeth Salander.

Lending credence to this theory is the simple fact that the clip has not been taken down from YouTube though it now has well over a million views. This idea of providing fans a leaked version thematically lines up with the novel and in a bit of technical formality, having the clip on YouTube allows Sony to not have to post an age restricted version via an official site.

So do you think the trailer was leaked on purpose as part of a clever marketing campaign? I think it’s distinctly possible and I know either way it’s a good thing for the promotion of the film. Here’s one more screen grab from the trailer. No it’s not THAT screen grab 🙂

Actor Daniel Craig from the red band The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trailer

The film stars Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander and Daniel Craig as Mikael Blomkvist. It has a premiere date set for December.
