Lindsay Lohan: Marilyn Monroe FAIL 2.0 in Spanish Vogue

Lindsay’s had a long-term obsession with Marilyn Monroe. Back in 2005 she nearly melted into a puddle of Redbull and liquid Adderall when somebody told her she reminded them of MM.

In 2008, Lindsay recreated Marilyn Monroe’s famous “Last Sitting” photo shoot in New York Magazine with the actual photographer from the legendary shoot, Bert Stern. Although Lindsay is a beautiful girl who sometimes looks absolutely stunning, she brought a startling hardness to her version of the sitting. Marilyn was all drunk and soft, and her beauty was so electrifying it owned the photographs.

Marilyn was 36 at the time of the sitting, and had been a sex symbol for a while, having lived through two divorces, countless affaird and more than a decade of drug and alcohol abuse and bouts of mental illness. The photographs Bert Stern took during that shoot were heart-breakingly lovely in their own right, but took on an added layer of weight when Monroe was found dead just a few weeks later.  Lindsay, who at that time was 22 and diving headfirst into drugs and shambolic romances, simply looked like a tired, thin young girl trying too hard to be an icon. Icons don’t look like they’re trying.

Since that shoot Lindsay has been most famous for her roller-coaster relationship with female DJ Samantha Ronson and her dramatically thin frame. When she and Samantha took a sharp break this spring, Lindsay tattooed a Marilyn Monroe quote on her wrist:”Everyone’s a star and deserves the right to twinkle.”

This May she went for another Monroe-inspired photoshoot, this time for Spanish Vogue. She vamped it up wearing reds and blacks accented with a signature Marilyn hairstyle, but again missed the mark. She’s too thin, still too hard. She may try to channel Marilyn, but she can’t quite nail the breathy, sexualized innocence.

Lohan, who’s movie Labor Pains recently premiered on ABC Family, wants desperately to be a star, to be an actress, to be a singer, to be know for her beauty and her talent, but she hasn’t convinced us yet. She was precocious in the Parent Trap and had a fresh-faced charm in Mean Girls, but since then she’s been grasping at air trying to pretend she’s something legendary. She should go back to being Lindsay Lohan and stop trying to be Marilyn Monroe, or Madonna, or a spray-tan entrepreneur.

Truly, there must be something out there for an adult Lindsay Lohan to do, but it’s not in the recording studio, and it’s not pretending to be Marilyn Monroe. She can still dress up in blond wigs and sing in the shower at home, but she must do something different when she clocks in for work or someday the mad flash of paparazzi at her door will dim and she’ll truly slip into irrelevance.
