The didgeridoo helps Crystal Bowersox do the Beatles on American Idol

Fox's Meet The Top 12 American Idol Finalists Event - Arrivals

“American Idol” rolled out The Beatles last night as the nine remaining contestants took their shots at performing songs from the legendary band’s amazing catalog. There were quite a few highlights but in an extreme turn to the weird the stand out star of the evening may have been not a voice but an instrument, the didgeridoo.

What is a didgeridoo you ask (and so did i last night)? Well the didgeridoo is a native Australian wind instrument developed approximately 1500 years ago. It is still in wide use today and has been described as a natural wooden trumpet. Check out this image of some didgeridoos.

Crystal chose Come Together because of the great groove she explains in the pre-performance interview with Ryan Seacrest.  The didgeridoo really adds a depth of sound and interesting funk to the performance and Ernie Fields Jr. (the son of Oklahoma jazz legend Ernie Fields) looks really cool playing the thing.

A didgeridoo.  Who knew?  Ellen loved that there was something new.  The performance was just too cool for school (sorry).  Good job “mama sox”.
