PHOTOS Hunger Games’ Amandla Stenberg slams Kylie Jenner for getting cornrows

Kylie cornrows

Kylie Jenner has come under heavy fire for her latest hairdo. This time, K-Jen’s got her locks styled in cornrows–an abrupt about-face for the 17-year-old, after she raised eyebrows with another blue look over the weekend.

That look was in part to promote a new line of hair extensions, wigs, and style products. It’s not immediately clear whether the current cornrows are an elaborate wig. But one observer who doesn’t take kindly to Kylie’s fashion follies is Hunger Games actress Amandla Stenberg. She was one of the thousands to respond to the above photo with a few words. Stenberg’s words, though, sounded a dissonant note:

when u appropriate black features and culture culture but fail to use ur position of power to help black Americans by directing attention towards ur wigs instead of police brutality or racism #whitegirlsdoitbetter

Kylie responded a mere eighty-nine seconds later: “Mad if I don’t. Mad if I do…. Go hang w Jaden or something.”

Stenberg attended her prom with Jaden Smith this past May. But it was Kylie Jenner who infamously made out with Jaden ad Kim and Kanye’s wedding in May of 2014.

Of course, that wasn’t the end of the spat. Stenberg took to Twitter to pen a lengthy rebuttal, which she then posted in the form of a picture. Here’s the tweet:

It reads, in part:

Black features are beautiful. Black women are not. White women are paragons of virtue and desire. Black women are objects of fetishism and brutality….While white women are praised for altering their bodies, plumping their lips and tanning their skin. black women are shamed although the same features exist on them naturally….Bigger than you or me. discussions are healthy. ignorance is not.

Stenberg isn’t exactly new to these topics. Her YouTube video “Don’t Cash Crop My Cornrows” has nearly two million views since she posted it this past spring:

Kylie Jenner has not responded further. Of late, her most recent tweet about hair or beauty came long before this most recent kerfuffle:
