VIDEO Pippa Middleton didn’t expect the Royal Wedding to be a big deal

Pippa Middleton Royal Wedding

Despite the intense tabloid coverage of her sister for the better part of the last decade, Pippa Middleton said she had no idea the 2011 Royal Wedding would turn into such a big spectacle.

“It sounds funny to say, we saw it, as a family, as just a family wedding,” the 30-year-old “Royal Sister” told Matt Lauer in her first TV interview. “I didn’t realize, perhaps, the scale of it, until afterwards. I had to make sure I helped my sister where I should, and look after the bridesmaids and pageboys. But we really saw it as a family getting together and doing their bit.”

The fact that it wasn’t simple a “family wedding” only set in when the wedding party went on the palace balcony afterward to wave to the gathered crowd: “It was when we saw crowds rushing around, towards the balcony, and I suddenly was like, ‘Wow, this is pretty special.'”

Another aspect of that big day that took Pippa by surprise was the reaction to her bridesmaid dress, which she said was designed so that it wouldn’t upstage Kate Middleton’s gown.

“It was completely unexpected,” she said. “I think the plan was not really for it to be a significant dress, really just to blend in with the train. I supposed it’s flattering… Embarrassing, definitely. Because it wasn’t planned, the dress was almost supposed to be insignificant.”
