His Royal Highness the Prince of Cambridge now has the rest of his title: George Alexander Louis.
Kensington Palace announced today that Prince William and Duchess Kate selected that traditional moniker for their baby son. That means that the baby, who is third in line for the throne, will one day be King George VII.
The previous royal George, King George VI, is the new baby’s great-great-grandfather (the current queen’s father). He served from December 1936 until his death in February 1952. His official name was Albert Frederick Arthur George.
Prince George assumed his third name, Louis, from his father. Prince William’s full name is William Arthur Philip Louis. Meanwhile, Alexander is likely derived from Queen Elizabeth’s full name, Elizabeth Alexandra Mary.
It was quite obvious that William and Kate would not (or could not) go with an nontraditional name. In fact, their feasible choices were so limited by royal custom that English betters already guessed the baby’s name — there were 7-to-4 odds on George.
Best of all for those folks who were disappointed to get a prince instead of a princess, they can now feel a bit better… At least they have a GAL!
