I could go out on a limb and say that Abigail Breslin’s Academy Award nominated turn as Olive Hoover in Little Miss Sunshine is my favorite performance ever by a child actor. Yes, I used the superlative “ever” but having thought on it for a while I can’t think of a better one.
While Little Miss Sunshine remains as it was, a nearly flawless film, the young actress who stole so many hearts has been growing up. Abigail is 16-years-old now and she already has an impressive list of professional accolades including her turns in My Sister’s Keeper, No Reservations and Nim’s Island.
Her latest project finds Breslin working with noted photographer Tyler Shields in his directorial debut for a film called Final Girl. Shields released a few promo photographs of Breslin and they really accentuate how much Abigail has matured since the film that made her famous.
Shields said of Breslin:
“I don’t even have the words to describe her; she blew me away on set yesterday. She learned things in 20 minutes it takes people years to learn. [She’s] just such a funny, smart, talented girl and to be 16 with such poise and class — it’s a real honor to have her. She is doing everything in the movie. She is unlike anyone has ever seen her before. You will see the dangerous and the beautiful side of Abigail Breslin.”
On IMDB there’s just a one line description of the film set for a 2013 release. It reads, “A pack of teenage boys choose the wrong girl to be the victim of their ‘initiation’.”
Just to further iterate what kind of company Miss Breslin keeps, she has also been cast for the film adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play August: Osage County, alongside Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep.
In a world [lives of child actors] that turns so many upside down it’s a treat to see someone with so much promise staying out of trouble and continuing to do great work.
