Barbara Walters caught some flack for naming The Kadashians (Kim, Kourtney, Khloe, and Kris Jenner) as one of her 10 Most Interesting People, but footage from her interview with the reality empresses shows she didn’t let them off easy. (This was shot before Kim’s Krazy divorce, so there were no questions about that.)
Here’s what Babs had to say:
“You don’t really act. You don’t sing. You don’t dance. You don’t have any – forgive me – any talent.”
Khloe retorted that they still entertain people, with Kim elaborating that it’s about getting people to love them (it’s equally, if not more about getting people to hate them, but that’s another subject.)
Kim explained
“It’s more of a challenge to go on a reality show and get people to fall in love with you for being you, so there is definitely a lot more pressure, I think, to be famous for being ourselves, than to play a character.”
Kourtney noted that they don’t disagree that they don’t have talents, and Khloe further explained: “Like, none of us think we have talents. None of us think we can sing or act or dance.”
There was that one time that Kim recorded a dance song, and then later said it was for herself when the public didn’t respond. But hey, you can’t blame a girl for trying.
They obviously don’t have any performance talents, unless you count being in full makeup 24/7 and talking in vocal fry (more on that in a later post,) and staging sitcom-like reality show segments as performance art, but they still have a multimillion dollar empire. They’ve been able to convince people to buy into the brand: whether it’s buying into loving it, or buying into hating it. Either way, the public is hooked.
