Red Dawn remake gets November 2, 2012 release date

Red Dawn starring Chris Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson gets November 2012 release date

It appears that The Hunger Games won’t be the only film in 2012 featuring Chris Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson running around in the woods of post-war America desperately trying to stay alive! According to BoxOfficeMojo.com the oft-delayed and oft-derided remake of the campy (both meanings of the word apply) 1984 film Red Dawn will finally be released to theaters on November 2, 2012.

WOLVERINES!

The remake, directed by Dan Bradley, was originally set to be released in 2010, but got held up as part of MGM’s bankruptcy. After stirring up a bit of controversy earlier this year with the announcement that China, the villainous invading country in the original and the remake, would be digitally altered and replaced with North Korea, it was announced in September that FilmDistrict had picked up the title for distribution. The only thing left was a release date, which now appears to be official.

“Dirty Dancing for guys,” as it is affectionately known among my pals, originally starred Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen, Jennifer Gray, Lea Thompson, C. Thomas Howell, and Powers Boothe (seen above). The 2010 2012 version will star Chris Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Adrianne Palicki, Isabel Lucas, Josh Peck, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (seen at the top of the post).

The film should be the final chapter in a dominating year for Chris Hemsworth whose 2012 repertoire looks to include Red Dawn, Snow White and the Huntsman, The Avengers, and The Cabin in the Woods.

You know, originally I was appalled by the mere idea of remaking Red Dawn, but now that it has been properly tortured and beaten, I confess that I’ve become a bit sympathetic towards the project and look forward to seeing it – especially if the China to North Korea conversion is clumsy! (Obviously Photoshopped logos on tanks, awkward overdubbing with different actors, jokes that only sort of make sense…)
