Rock icon Bob Dylan was reportedly “rounded up” by a 22-year-old female officer in Long Branch New jersey after members of a mostly Latino neighborhood called police about a suspicious looking character that look a bit out of place. Apparently ol’ Bob was Walkin’ Down The Line from the Ocean Place Resort where he was staying and wandered into unfamiliar surroundings.
‘Residents called to complain there was an old scruffy man acting suspiciously,’ said senior officer Craig Spencer of Long Branch. ‘It was an odd request because it was mid-afternoon. But it’s an ethnic Latin area and the residents felt he didn’t fit in.’
The unnamed police officer demanded to see identification and when the crooner could only offer his name and hopes of being recognized she stuffed him in the back of the police car and took him to his hotel room.
Then she radioed her older colleagues at the police station to ask if anyone knew who Bob Dylan was.
‘I’m afraid we all fell about laughing,’ said Spencer. ‘If it was me, I’d have been demanding his autograph, not his ID.
‘The poor woman has taken rather a lot of abuse from us. I offered to bring in some of my Dylan albums. Unfortunately, she doesn’t know what vinyl is either.’
I have to believe that this was a very small dream come true for Bob, who probably relished the notion of being treated like an everyday suspicious-looking scruffy old man. The article says the incident occurred “yesterday,” but Bob is currently on tour in California so I’m guessing this happened back around July 23rd when Dylan played Lakewood, New jersey.
Amazingly this is the third Bob Dylan story I’ve been able to write about! Amazing because it’s hard for ol’ Bobby D to crack the celebrity gossip headlines these days, due in large part to the fact that 22-year-old police officers have no idea who he is. Thankfully Bob had porta-potty issues, has a rumored Christmas album, and now he almost got arrested!
