Everyone is devastated by the slaying of 26 innocent children and teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary last week. In the face of such senseless violence, it’s easy to get pulled into a darkness.
Journalist Ann Curry has proposed a way to someone turn this unimaginably horrible situation into an inspiration for good. She asks everyone to consider doing an act of kindness, big or small, for every life lost inside of Sandy Hook Elementary last Friday:
“What if? Imagine if everyone could commit to doing one act of kindness for every one of those children killed in Newtown.”
Ann Curry’s proposal, known as #26acts on Twitter, has really taken off. She’s currently using her Twitter feed to retweet #26acts people are reporting doing.
It’s a beautiful thing to watch millions of people come up with ways to help others, or just bring a smile to someone else’s face.

Many of the acts being shared involve small amounts of money, like giving other people lattes or flowers, or gift cards, or bigger tips; but many of them are kind gestures that don’t involve money at all.
You can donate to a charity or cause, or actually give money, toys, food, random gifts, to strangers. You can volunteer your time, help someone cross the street, do a chore for a family member or a task for a coworker, leave money to buy a coke on a vending machine, give your barista money to buy the next for drinks for people in line, the list goes on and on.
