First Look: Kristen Stewart as Marylou in film adaptation of Kerouac’s On the Road

Kristen Stewart Marylou

I always get a little queasy when I discover one of my favorite literary classics is being made into a film.  Well I about fell of my bloggin’ chair when these photos came to my attention and were labeled as the first official images from “On the Road.”  I thought, “No it can’t be THAT ‘On the Road,’ I mean are they making Kerouac’s timeless rhythmic bellwether book a film and is Kristen Stewart playing (gulp) Marylou!?!

Well the answer to my questions are a surprising and resounding yes.  What you are looking at are the official first images from the production of the film adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road.”  I can’t imagine how on Earth they’re going to translate those words, those beautiful flowing words, into film but I guess I’ll have to save judgment for if and when I see it.

I mean can you imagine the weight of trying to communicate this type of written word beauty on film:

“I realized that I had died and been reborn numberless times but just didn’t remember because the transitions from life to death and back are so ghostly easy, a magical action for naught, like falling asleep and waking up again a million times, the utter casualness and deep ignorance of it.”

There are a hundred million of those types of passages in Kerouac’s generational trumpet stream-of-consciousness masterpiece.  I think I’m getting away from myself here because the fact is there’s going to be a movie and it’s coming this year.  According to IMDB the film will also feature Sam Riley as Sal Paradise and Garrett Hedlund as Dean Moriarty.

Here is the latter along with Stewart in one more additional image from the film adaptation of “On the Road.”

Digging a little deeper, the man who is responsible for translating “On the Road” is screenwriter Jose Rivera whose credits include “Motorcycle Diaries” and “Letters to Juliet.”  Jose you are a brave soul!

So what do you think of “On the Road” becoming a film?  Are you excited about the prospect and what do you think of Stewart being chosen to play Marylou?
