Banned? Nude artwork for Kanye West’s “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”

Looks like Kanye is stirring up some Twitterversy hype to sell his new album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (Out Nov 22).

His label questioned putting out the above album cover, which features a nude armless, winged girl with a tail straddling a black dude holding a green bottle, but ultimately agreed to stand behind it despite fears that Wal-Mart, or even Best Buy wouldn’t stock the controversial image.

Last night Kanye tweeted

“Yoooo they banned my album cover!!!!!  Banned in the US!! They don’t want me chilling on the couch with my phoenix… In the 70s album covers had actual nudity… It’s so funny that people forget that… Everything has been so commercialized now… So Nirvana can have a naked human being on they cover but I can’t have a PAINTING of a monster with no arms and a polka dot tail and wings.”

An anonymous rep for Island Def Jam told The LA Times (via EW) “while the label “strongly urged” West to ditch the image, he “was told if he wanted to do it, the label would stand behind him.”

Sounds like a little manufactured drama to ramp up album sales.
