Dreamworks Studios has released the first images from the film Real Steel, not due to hit theaters until November 18, 2011. The movie is directed by Shawn Levy and features Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly, Kevin Durand, Dakota Goyo and Anthony Mackie.
Here’s the synopsis from Dreamworks:
A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future, where the sport of boxing has gone hi-tech, “Real Steel” stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.
In the production still above Charlie (Hugh Jackman) instructs his former league bot Noisy Boy, who is pitted against backroom brawler Midas at the underground robot fight club Crash Palace.
I’m a guy. This sounds ridiculously cool! It’s like Rocky meets Robot Wars! Plus, all the violence is between machines so you don’t even have to feel guilty for enjoying it! Brilliant! Too bad about the father/son reconciliation/emotional drama stuff. And I bet there’s an ex-wife/mom still in love with Hugh Jackman’s character, though she won’t admit it until he changes his violent ways. Oh well – I’d still pay $10 to see 8-foot homemade robots doing battle on the big screen!
