There is no way he will be able to fill Conan’s shoes.

For one thing, I think Conan has bigger feet.

For another, Conan is a comic genius. Fallon? Ummmm, not so much.

You’re right about the writing being weak. In the monologue, Fallon was at his best when he went off script and started making fun of people applauding states. He was more relaxed like that and able to be himself. With more confidence and experience, he can hopefully do more of that.

Lick of Ten was just stupid. It must have come from the sponsorship sales team. There was no comedic payoff there.

My biggest problem with his performance was how he interviewed the guests. I learned more about Jimmy Fallon than I did about DiNero or Timberlake. The interviews have to be about the guest. The interviewer is just there to make the guest look good and add some value — not to be the focus of attention.

I think he can overcome these liabilities. The main question is whether NBC will give him time. When Conan took over, there was less competition and a longer evaluation cycle. The only ones publishing commentary were actual critics. The explosion of the Internet since then creates a storm on commentary Conan never had to deal with.

I came over to the post expecting some serious harshness (his performance was a little rough and I know starcasm!) but you guys were quite kind. (Not to start any nasty rumors or ruin your reputation) I’ll be watching tonight as well. Maybe Tina will whoop them writers into shape!
