Louis CK sexual misconduct allegations resurface, this time from Tig Notaro

Louis SNL

Two years ago, comedian Jen Kirkman insinuated that Louis CK had done something sexual in front of her without her consent. Kirkman explained that she turned down an offer to go on tour with the unnamed comedian because she was worried she’d “be getting more of the same weird treatment” from him. She never mentioned CK’s name–or that of anyone else–but the details she included left little doubt about who she meant.

A few weeks later, Kirkman clarified that she “never was sexually abused,” and that “All of the people that I spoke about anonymously…are still friends of mine, and I’m fine with them and they’re fine with me.” However, she didn’t recant what amounted to the first of the Louis CK sexual misconduct allegations, reminding her audience that “They know all they stuff they did that bothered me.”

Now, those allegations have been given new life thanks to new interview with Louis’ former associate Tig Notaro. Her 2012 special Live–which she famously recorded the same day she’d been diagnosed with breast cancer–was first released on Louis’ web site, and One Mississippi, her TV show, lists CK as an executive producer. Notaro, like Kirkman, refused to describe exactly what happened between the two of them, saying only that there had been “an incident” before One Mississippi went into production. What she did say, though, paints an ugly picture. From the Daily Beast:

I think it’s important to take care of [those allegations], to handle that, because it’s serious to be assaulted. It’s serious to be harassed. It’s serious, it’s serious, it’s serious. And that’s what we want to do with this show. [NOTE: A major plot point in the second season of One Mississippi is the sexual assault of Stephanie Allynne, who plays Notaro’s love interest on the show and to whom Notaro is married in real life.] We of course want to create comedy, but we also really, really feel like we have the opportunity to do something with One Mississippi, because it does not stop. And, you know, I walk around doing shows at comedy clubs and you just hear from people left and right of what some big-shot comedian or person has done. People just excuse it….It’s an ongoing issue and in the writers’ room we were very open about the different levels of harassment or assault that we’ve witnessed or experienced. I think it’s despicable what people in power, or any people, when they do this.

The only other high-profile comedian to mention any Louis CK sexual misconduct allegations since Kirkman’s implication was Roseanne Barr, in a separate Daily Beast interview last year. Barr said she didn’t “have first-hand knowledge” of anything specific, but that stories about CK–and about other male comedians–were widespread among females in the business. “It’s Louis C.K., locking the door and masturbating in front of women comics and writers,” Barr said. “I can’t tell you—I’ve heard so many stories. Not just him, but a lot of them. And it’s just par for the course. It’s just shit women have to put up with.”

Reps for Louis CK did not respond to Barr’s allegations from last year, and they have yet to respond to Notaro’s this week.

Where in that statement does Tig say anything about CK? Oh wait. She doesn’t.

Sooooo, Jen Kirkman experienced a weird “incident” with Louie but says that she wasn’t sexually abused. Now, this Notaro broad won’t give any details about this nebulous, vague incident?

Sounds like Notaro is promoting her comedy-with-a-cause crusade off of Louie’s allegations in her interview.

Another example of post-feminism grossly overreaching for a target.

Nobody has used the term “broad” since 1985, dum b a s s

Well, since it’s still a very male-dominated & controlled arena (stand-up comedy, etc.) and Louis CK wields a lot of power and money these days, they may feel he can undermine their careers; I kinda’ get why they aren’t come straight out with his name, plus there’s the lawsuit issues…defamation of character, etc. This way, they can imply, suggest, and so on about Louie… Also I’m guessing Rosanne Barr is the only one calling him out directly perhaps because she feels he can’t do anything to her (at this stage in her career/reputation) like he could to others who are still trying to get traction with their careers/shows/connections, at this stage.

Btw, I know this is a little long, but it explains things better…here is what Jen Kirkman initially said 2 years ago in her podcast:
“And then I had another guy who is a very famous comic. He is probably at Cosby-level at this point. He is lauded as a genius. He is basically a French filmmaker at this point. You know, new material every year. He’s a known perv. And there’s a lockdown on talking about him. His guy friends are standing by him, and you cannot say a bad thing about him. And I’ve been told by people “Well then say it then. Say it if it’s true.” If I say it, my career is over. My manager and my agent have told me that. They didn’t threaten it. They just said to me “You know what Jen, it’s not worth it because you’ll be torn apart. Look at the Cosby women.” And this guy didn’t rape me, but he made a certain difficult decision to go on tour with him really hard. Because I knew if I did, I’d be getting more of the same weird treatment I’d been getting from him. And it was really f*cked up, and this person was married. So it was not good, and so I hold a lot of resentment.”

She then went on to clarify later, with this statement:
“…My point was that nobody has ever taken their genitals out in front of me, or hurt me physically, but that, in this business, you have friends, mentors, co-workers, who can sometimes be creepy in a way that isn’t funny. Suddenly you don’t feel part of a joke, you feel…like…you are being…inappropriately hit on by someone who is married….All of the people that I spoke about anonymously on that podcast are still friends of mine, and I’m fine with them and they’re fine with me. And they all know the stuff they did that bothered me. It’s nuanced, that way. I’m not going to their house for Christmas. I’m still not of the opinion that they might be a little weird. But I was never was sexually abused.”

No one would make up a story like this. There is nothing to gain. It’s practically self-authenticating

Women lie. It happens, and it’s particularly ruinous to the majority who tell the truth. Regardless, I’m not speculating one way or the other on this particular incident. I just do not accept the “women never lie” mantra. It’s been proven false and it defies logic.

Well, now I know about her show, one mississippi, and i guess that was gained…..exposure to a show most people have never heard of before……and there you have it.

  • Adía

If “One Mississippi” is her show and she has all this control, why did she ever let him sign on as an EP?

  • Volvican

Listen, if Tig came out and said ,’Louis did this. It was gross, it was violating and wrong’ I’d believe her. Some people you just know don’t lie about this stuff – and Tig wouldn’t. So I was ready to read this and finally believe these rumours. But she doesn’t say anything! That paints no picture at all!

    • D’Fwan

YES!!!! Everything you say…..YES TO IT ALL!!!
