Jamie Lynn Spears and daughter Maddie together

New details in the official police report from the ATV accident involving Jamie Lynn Spears’ 8-year-old daughter Maddie describe a terrifying series of events that would be any parent’s worst nightmare.

According to the accident report, obtained by ET, Maddie was driving her Polaris ATV on the family’s property in Louisiana when she “overcorrected” to avoid a drainage ditch and flipped into a pond. The report reveals that both Jamie Lynn Spears and her husband, Jamie Watson, observed the accident from approximately 100 yards away.

The two of them ran and dove into the pond in an attempt to rescue Maddie, who was still seated and submerged in the ATV. “The child was trapped and secured by the seatbelt and the ATV’s safety netting,” the police report states. “Within two minutes, Acadian Ambulance Services arrived and assisted in freeing the child from the cold waters.”

Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards later issued a statement about the incident, and he describes the harrowing ordeal: “The ATV and child were instantly submerged in the water right before their eyes,” he said, referring to Jamie Lynn Spears and Jamie Watson.

Here is the full statement from the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office:

FLUKER — Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards reports that shortly before 3:00 p.m., yesterday February 5, 2017, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Hwy 51 in Fluker regarding an ATV accident involving a juvenile.

When deputies arrived, Acadian Ambulance Services was already on scene and helped the mother, step-father, and other family members rescue an 8- year old female who was submerged inside of a Polaris ATV in a pond.

The incident occurred about 100 yards from where her family was standing and watching as the child and the Polaris entered a nearby pond on the property. Evidence reveals that the child was traveling near the south west corner of the property where she subsequently maneuvered the ATV to the right to avoid running over a drainage ditch located near the pond. In doing so, she overcorrected causing the ATV to enter the pond. The ATV and child were instantly submerged in the water right before their eyes. Within seconds the child’s mother, step-father and other family members reached the pond, dove in and attempted to rescue the child to no avail. The child was trapped and secured by the seatbelt and the ATV’s safety netting. Within two minutes, Acadian Ambulance Services arrived and assisted in freeing the child from the cold waters.

Currently, the child is reported to be in stable but critical condition. This is an extremely tragic accident. The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office is asking you to keep this family in your constant prayers as they try to cope with this horrible incident. We ask that you respect their privacy during this time of need.

At the time of ET’s report hours ago, Maddie was still reportedly in stable but critical condition.

Jamie Lynn and Britney’s dad, Jamie Spears, said of the incident: “All I can say is pray for our baby Maddie.”

Meanwhile, Britney Spears posted this photo of Maddie on Instagram and wrote “Need all the wishes and prayers for my niece ?‬”

Jamie Lynn Spears daughter Maddie driving ATV

In our original post, we shared the photo above featuring Maddie driving a Polaris RZR 170 ATV from back in November, and TMZ has since revealed that it was a gift to her from mom Jamie Lynn for her seventh birthday. It is still unclear if it is the same one she was driving on Sunday afternoon.

Our thoughts are still with Jamie Lynn Spears and her friends and family and we are hopeful that Maddie will make a full recovery.

UPDATE – As of Tuesday, February 7, Maddie is reportedly “awake and talking!” Click the link for more details!

That would be terrifying to watch as a parent especially when she’s under water and you can’t get her out. I hope Maddie is 100% ok. I don’t care how experienced a kid is at driving an ATV there needs to be a rule of never getting within like 40 ft of water. Accidents happen and I hope she’s ok. Sending prayers n well wishes.

Especially since she was trying to avoid a drainage ditch….maybe her parents should have set some rules on where she could ride and where were the areas that were off limits. A drainage ditch…pond. Sounds like a bad area for an 8 year old to be driving around.

On Jamie Lynn’s instagram page there is video of the child getting this ATV as a surprise gift, even back then people were commenting on how unsafe of a present that was.

She was under water for two minutes or seven? I just pray she makes it ??

It’s Louisiana – Sportsmans Paradise. We’re taught to hunt, fish, drive and cook at earlier ages. Taught how to survive and fend for ourselves and, when needed, to help others do the same. Our families spend far more time together doing these things than most families. At least we’re not staring at our I-phones and watching the KarTrashians. I’ve told those that are berating this family to not judge it til you’ve lived/learned it. I’m proud of my heritage.

I don’t see people berating the family here. I see people pointing out that an 8 year old child driving an ATV near water is not safe, which sadly led to this tragic accident. I really hope Maddie survives, and recovers well – being unconscious under water is not good 🙁

I don’t want to judge, because accidents do happen, and this sounds like a horrible one. However, this not just a freak accident. Where I grew up on the west coast, having atvs and 4-wheelers was very popular. Our small community lost several children and teenagers because they weren’t wearing the right safety equipment, or were just being daredevils without supervision (this was only ten or so years ago). Yeah, they are really fun to play with, but you have to remember that this thing you are riding could tip and easily break every bone in your body in seconds. Definitely not for children, in my opinion. Lots of prayers going out to this little one and her family.

    I can’t even imagine. !!!

I keep thinking/praying for this little girl – such a tragic accident. I don’t understand how an ambulance was able to get there in 2 minutes unless it happened to be driving by. It makes me nervous that she was under water until the ambulance arrived – I feel like unfortunately she was probably under longer than that which can’t be good. Always thought Jamie Lynn was a good teen mom and how she left Hollywood and focused on her daughter – this must be absolutely devastating for their family
