HGTV, Chipper Gaines offer responses to Fixer Upper anti-gay allegations: ‘Do everything in love’

Fixer Upper book 2

The Chip and Joanna Gaines anti-gay rumors have been swirling for days, thanks to the controversial views of their mega-church’s pastor. Jimmy Seibert, the head of the Antioch Community Church in Waco, got the Gainses into some trouble on the day of the Fixer Upper Season 4 premiere, after a BuzzFeed story unearthed anti-gay and pro-conversion therapy comments the pastor made on several occasions–most notably in his first sermon after the 2015 Supreme Court ruling making gay marriage legal in all 50 states. (Click here to see Seibert’s full 2015 sermon, along with some of his other inflammatory remarks.)

Though neither Joanna nor Chip Gaines had ever made public statements regarding their views on same sex marriage or widely condemned conversion therapy practices, the report put pressure on Fixer Upper home network HGTV, which regularly features gay couples and individuals on its other shows. (To date, a gay couple has yet to appear on Fixer Upper.) Now, HGTV has offered a brief statement of support of the LGBT community, in an effort at clarifying matters. “We don’t discriminate against members of the LGBT community in any of our shows,” the network said, according to Variety. “HGTV is proud to have a crystal clear, consistent record of including people from all walks of life in its series.”

In addition, Chipper Gaines himself took to Twitter with a series of statements that didn’t address the issue directly, but appeared to assuage the fears of many fans. Their main takeaway? According to Chip, we should “Do everything in love”:

    Trump people.

    • LoLo

So you are generalizing a group of people based off of this? Isn’t that what people accuse Trump followers of doing?

      • Jen

Liberals are all-inclusive and tolerant of all beliefs…unless you’re a Christian- then they’re the most hateful, spiteful, double-standard folks in all the world. Makes lots of sense, huh? πŸ™„ Thank GOD Trump won!

        • JohnMyroro

          Trump person.

        • LoLo

I will never understand how some supporters accuse his supporters of things then turn around & do the same thing they claim to be against. I’m so over people making generalized statements about people when they don’t know the people.

How wonderfull would the world be when we would all be liberal and tolerant towards any religion.
Unfortunately, there are so many misconceptions and there is so much misunderstanding.
Only when God, nomatter how you call him/ it would send another of his children to earth to tell us and teach us, there would be a way to tell which religion managed to get the closest to what God meant for us.
Right now God is just looking at us shaking his head often. Like a mother does watching her kids fight.
We have huge problems ahead of us that could connect us but its not happening yet.

That’s not at all addressing any concern?

  • LoLo

The first time I watched their show I thought Chip was gay himself.

  • kk

Big fan of their show, and side with their beliefs/statements. Bring on the comments of ‘I’m not watching anymore’. No matter what the belief is, each side can agree that everyone has an opinion and should be able to state it. The fact that this is even a topic for an article is ridiculous. Their beliefs don’t hinder them from running their business or being good parents.

    • Mrs. G

you just contradicted yourself saying everyone has an opinion and should state that so why cant they say they are not watching anymore? i’m sure christians dont watch certain shows because it’s not within their beliefs. i vote with my dollar!! i won’t do business with people who do not have the same beliefs as myself. it’s my right!! :)

      • http://life-as-trip.tumblr.com/ Kenneth

its your right like free speech is a “right”, doesn’t mean people don’t look stupid cashing in on their “rights”….. How about the christian lady that owns her own photography business and has you’re exact same mindset…. she wont take pictures or offer her business to anyone that does not share he belief on same sex marriage….. oh wait that’s not ok, she cant refuse business based on her beliefs. But you can refuse to do business with her because of yours. its funny just how contradicting everyone is when you take a step back and actually evaluate what it is you think you are actually taking a stance on.

        • Mrs. G

I’m speaking as a consumer. It is MY RIGHT to buy your product, watch your show or buy your service. If you’re doing business/own a company well then yeah it’s wrong. They have laws in place! If some photographer wants to lose business that’s not exactly smart.

          • http://life-as-trip.tumblr.com/ Kenneth

Ya you are right. there are laws. And laws that protect a business owner from practicing business that goes against their religious belief. As this lady did In Indiana. Which Indiana had the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. She exercised her “right to refuse service”. But as soon as the liberal media and drive by mob swooped in, you know, the 12%’ers that try to act like an entire population has the same beefs, the legislators did what all politically correct legislators do and made an amendment saying you couldn’t do it based on religious beliefs. Reason 2,431 Trump won. These city elites and East/West “scholars” are not America.

If Chip doesnt want to do business with gay couples then fine, let them go down because they cant find business. But the government dictating how Chip and his wife run their business is again another reason Trump won. People are sick of it
