VIDEO TEEN MOM Catelynn and Tyler discuss postpartum depression on ‘The Doctors’

TEEN MOM Catelynn and Tyler open up about postpartum depression

As stars of MTV’s hit reality TV series Teen Mom, Catelynn and Tyler Baltierra have not had it easy this season. The couple has gone through multiple hardships this season, from dealing with Catelynn’s mental health issues which put a strain on their marriage, to coming to terms with the fact that they might not ever visit with their firstborn daughter Carly after her adopted parents Brandon and Teresa didn’t respond to their annual visitation request.

But things seem like they’re getting better between Catelynn and Tyler. The Teen Mom OG stars were guests on the syndicated daytime talk show The Doctors and they opened up about Catelynn’s struggle with postpartum depression after she gave birth to their daughter Nova. It looks like the couple is stronger now after Tyler helped Catelynn battle her mental illness.

During their segment, Dr. Mike Dow explained that there are two ways that a spouse can deal with their spouse going through depression and postpartum depression. He said that asking questions like “What’s wrong with you?” can lead their spouse to respond defensively and it might make them not want to seek professional help. But by asking simple questions like “How can I help you?” it makes the spouse more likely to want to seek treatment.

Tyler explained how he decided to approach his wife Catelynn about her postpartum depression, and he simply asked her if there was anything he could to do help. After Catelynn said that she wanted to go away for treatment, he did some research and found a rehab—the facility in Arizona that Catelynn visited earlier this season on Teen Mom OG.

Catelynn explained that she thought that she needed help and she wanted to seek treatment at a rehab facility, but she kept telling herself that she could deal with her mental illness on her own.

“And then it was like finally coming to this realization where it’s like, I don’t think this is just panic disorders and depression, I think this is a little bit more like postpartum, I started noticing,” Catelynn said.

Tyler said Catelynn was in denial for a long time about having postpartum. He said that he learned that a lot of women don’t even know that they’re going through postpartum depression when they’re experiencing the symptoms—which includes irritability and increases or decreases in appetite and sleeping patterns. But by speaking up and talking to Catelynn, he helped her realize that what she was experiencing wasn’t just depression and anxiety, it was really postpartum and she was able to find the help she needed to overcome her illness.

Ugh, I’m so over hearing about her mental illnesses.

I do like this couple more than the rest of them although I think tyler needs to cool it with all the passive aggressive comments. he seems to have very little understanding how obvious his sneers are. Catelynn needs a purpose in life. right now she’s a passive part of the show, passive part of being a mother etc.. she needs to figure out who she is and what she wants to do.. but to get there she needs long term talk therapy not more pills and the occasional meeting with that social worker.

Tyler is passive aggressively sneering because Cate is passive aggressively expanding her size. They’re both too weak to be alone or to leave each other (which they should have done long, long ago). So, they’re anchored to each other but resent every minute of it. There’s going to be a lot more “depression” post partum blues and passive aggressiveness in their future too.

I can’t believe she’s talking about having more kids when she can barely take care of herself or her kid.

    • Guest

Hell, she can’t even take care of a pig. She’s a poor excuse for a mother.

      • CatesZebraHoodie

And now she wants a horse!!

        • DoogieHowser

I don’t understand why they encouraged her to ride horses. All of the places with horses I know of have weight limits at around 280-300 lbs. for the horse’s sake. I have family members that cannot and will probably never get to ride horses because of weight ( not all from obesity, a lot of them lift and are built) not a single one would even want to strain the back of a horse for a fun ride. I live in horse country and I have never seen anyone that looks over 250 on the back of a horse. She is selfish.

          • CatesZebraHoodie

Hahaha I just died. Have we actually seen her ride them or just groom and lead them?

            • DoogieHowser

But she already had that brush your daughter’s hair and go for walks outside. It isn’t like Michigan has sweltering hot summers. Mommy and me classes would be a great way for her to fill her time and would be nice for the show. Even Farrah did it with Sophia and brought her mother along. Catelynn and her mom can do something like take her to toddler tumbling and then to those little girl salons as a storyline for battlung depression. Tyler could of did a story line of turning a spare room into a home gym while Cate was away and had it as a surprise. He could then promise to work out with her and start a tradition family walks. He could of bought a jogging stroller at the baby store with his Dad there to say goofy stuff about baby stuff and joke around about breast pumps. Their talks could be while he walked the dogs and cate pushed the stroller around a park instead of the dining room table. The thing about these shows is there has to be one person your happy and rooting for. I came up with a more interesting one for tv that could of been genuine and actually beneficial IRL in the long term and would of actually helped their case with Carly’s family.

But a horse she can board and pay someone else to care for while she forgets about him. Actually she kind of does that to nova by dumping her at her mom’s house all the time.

    • FR

I like how she works in overeating as a symptom of PPD but then contradicts herself and basically admits she was “depressed” even before she got pregnant (so how do they know she has PPD be regular depression?). She’s gonna stay sad until she takes some personal responsibility for what she puts in her mouth.

I’m watching this week’s teen mom and when Cate is talking about wanting to buy a house she keeps saying she wants a connection. I think that’s what’s missing in her and Tyler’s relationship. There’s no connection. They were just comfortable and took the next step.

    • DoogieHowser

Nova would count as a connection was more than a house. If that doesn’t feel like sharing your life with someone, a house isn’t going to magically make a marriage. They have been sharing apartments and homes already, a different set of walls isn’t a magical solution.

      • CatesZebraHoodie

Should have said horse not house.

Just because you have a baby with somebody or share a house doesn’t mean you have a connection with them though. They seem more like roommates and not a young couple in love.

  • Guest

    They ain’t gonna last.

    • CatesZebraHoodie

They’ve been together since they were like 14. This is comfortable for them and they will tolerate each other’s crap. That’s why they stay.

      • DoogieHowser

Well that, and Tyler isn’t ready to adress his own issues. Catelynn loosing what little life she had in her is a good way for him to shift focus onto her instead of himself. In addition, he likes the money from the show and staying together keeps that going.

He also doesn’t want to leave her because of Nova. If he can’t get Cate to take care of the baby when he is there with him, can you imagine sharing custody with her after a divorce? Can you imagine how Cate will be sharing custody on top of extended family? Can you imagine your kid at Cate’s house without you and wondering if Nova had breakfast or if she going to make it to school? He probably worries about what Cate would feed her too. He doesn’t like fat and unhealthy and he probably worries about Nova growing up fat too.

He doesn’t know for sure who would even get primary custody. Him staying a bit longer and showing that he tried to help Cate, has record of her not taking care of Nova while he was taking on that role by himself among other things, he can get primary custody if he decides to leave. I think he is realizing that he has to stop smoking so that can’t be used against him and set a track record in his favor first. They are not going to last at all and I don’t think he even wants to try anymore. Since he has probably been thinking about it, I am sure he is formulating a long term plan on how to leave. Hopefully he lines up a forever practical job first or at least more school in the mean time. Now if he can do that is a story that only time will tell but I bet he has thought this scenario through and through more and more with each passing day.

  • Toni

I could’ve sworn she started out thinking it was postpartum and then thought it was deeper than that since she wasn’t feeling any better? And that’s when we started hearing “my mental illness” 25 times per episode

    • CatesZebraHoodie

Wait……Cate has a mental illness??? I never heard about that lol

  • Ashley

But I thought that Tyler was complaining about Catelyn not keeping up with her therapy and such after she got back from “rehab,” and that she didn’t really change her ways? I feel like these two will say anything just to stay in the spotlight and make a buck (so that they can put off joining the real world for even longer).

    • CatesZebraHoodie

That’s exactly what he’s said on TM.

  • Harper

I think Cate needs to get out and get some fresh air…take up a hobby…get involved in the community. All she does is sit on the couch, chewing on her fingers and wallowing in her misery. I’m so bored with her story line, every week it’s her being depressed and crying. Then here she is with a big ol’ grin and posing next and TV show’s sign.

I don’t blame Brandon and Theresa for pulling the brakes on the contact, Tyler and Cate have some issues and I wouldn’t want my daughter tied into that for some dumb show on MTV.

  • Guest

Why are these two still together? They clearly aren’t good for each other.

  • Alisson Leech

Brandon and Teresa, continue to keep Carly away!!!

    • DoogieHowser

I am surprised it took this long even with the tugging of emotions. I wonder if they only did a little tv because she was already a story line and it would be enough to cover a decent chunk of her college savings.

      • Alisson Leech

I am a birthmom and agree completely with them protecting their daughter from the trailer trash madness!

  • DoogieHowser

Ok I wnat to add one positive thing here because I have been a bit harsh. Her hair and makeup in the clip look really pretty. She can look really nice when she cleans up. She has potential.

    • Sam

If you kept applying make up to a turd it would clean up pretty well too

  • Regina

I hate how she now has a scapegoat for being lazy.
“I hate how my mental illness is ruining everything!”
UH GET UP AND DO SOMETHING. ANYTHING.

  • Sam

Hm, how about some advice on how get on television from spreading your fat gorilla legs and getting knocked up?

  • Sam

Good God most of these commenters sound pathetic…

  • Elle

Tyler is such a creepy douchebag. He says horrible things to her & she just takes it and makes excuses.

  • battled1

I hope they don’t overthink this & can be happy!!…I’m glad that they have a real family unit now. Honestly, Catelynn looks suited to being a spouse & very maternal figure. She looks healthier & very pretty in this video. Tyler also looks more mature & comfortable as an official hubby now. They both seem more settled to me–now they are much more “acceptable” to Society in their current roles. I’m all for that! 🙂
