The man who shot at George Zimmerman in May of 2015 has been sentenced to 20 years behind bars.

38-year-old Matthew Apperson was found guilty of attempted second-degree murder last month by a jury in Seminole County, Florida.

Apperson had testified that he shot in self-defense after alleging that Zimmerman brandished a firearm at him during a road rage incident in May of last year. Zimmerman testified that Apperson was chasing him and that he believed it was Apperson’s intent to kill him. Zimmerman stated in past testimony that he blamed Matthew Apperson for pulling the trigger, explaining that “I don’t believe in blaming the gun,” according to WFTV.

Zimmerman, a former neighborhood watch volunteer who was acquitted in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, told the court today that Apperson showed no regard for human life when he took out his gun and shot at him after singling him out and following him for no good reason. “The crux here is Mr. Apperson’s blatant disregard for my life, any life … anybody driving up and down Lake Mary Boulevard,” he said.

Judge Debra S. Nelson handed down the 20-year-sentence, the state-mandated minimum for shooting at another person with a gun.
